I covered animal and equine science stories, events, and activities for two years as a blogger on the digital version of "The Rocky Mountain Collegian" at Colorado State University. I had a very flexible editor and was able to use my blog as a by-line and challenge myself to explore different types of media coverage.
I was able to use my weekly blog on Colorado State University's online newspaper as a by-line and cover animal and equine science events, livestock industry partners, students, as well as program policies related to disease outbreaks. This also led to freelance work including a piece published in the "Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse" magazine.
In the fall of 2014 we had a guest speaker from a Denver television in my writing and online journalism course who did his remote coverage completely on his iPhone. I challenged myself to create video news coverage from animal and equine science events on my iPhone to post on my blog on "The Rocky Mountain Collegian."
These multimedia reporting packages on animal and equine science stories at Colorado State University first appeared on the "Rocky Mountain Collegian" online from the fall of 2014 through the spring of 2015. The majority have a complete audio reporting package, but a few also included a brief story, and/or photo or photo essay, which broadened my skills and the type of online coverage I could give my 800 weekly Livestock Lounge blog readers.
